DISHUI LAKE LINEAR PARK:
Shanghai, China
With a diameter of 2.5 km and a water body of 4.9 km2, Dishui Lake is the largest man-made freshwater
lake in China and the centrepiece of Shanghai’s urban plan for Lingang Port City. The original 80m wide
green-belt and extensive four-lane road around the lake separated the Port City’s commercial edge from
the water and lacked a destination for those who would travel the one-hour journey from central Shanghai.
As an answer to this challenge, both the 8.2 km green belt and road were converted into a linear sports
park and tree lined grandiose avenue linking the city and water edge together as one. International events
include marathons, triathlons, bicycle racing, and charity runs were designed in unison with a network
of nature trails, grand lawns, undulating hills, themed botanical gardens and wetlands.

DONGHU PARK Huahai Road:
Shanghai, China
As part of Shanghai's "Better City Better Life’ 2010 World Expo strategy, the grounds fronting the former
historic home of the city's famous pre-revolution gangster 'Pockmark Tu', now known as Donghu Hotel,
host a new 4,400 sqm neighborhood park.
A 'Wisteria marquee' symbolizing a threshold into Shanghai's celebrated former French Concession continues
through the park as a wisteria journey guided by a sinuous wooden trellis. Occasionally the frame of
the trellis drops down to the floor to become a long bench and links the north and south park entrances
of Huahai Road with the intersection of Donghu Road. Red clay-brick paving hint of a bygone 1920's Shanghai’s
former French Concession charm.

THE MAYOR'S GARDEN OF THE 8TH CHINA INTERNATIONAL GARDEN EXPO:
Chongqing, China
With ‘Ecology and the built environment’ as a reoccurring emphasis, the China International Garden Expo
of 2011 opened in Chongqing as a permanent park showcasing 134 various themed gardens.
The Mayor's Garden, equally divided by an undulating corten-steel wall symbolizes ecological disconnection
found in today’s growing modern city. At day the wall's semi-transparent patterns allow views of a native
indigenous bamboo forest beyond. By night the wall's perforation becomes luminous with its bamboo patterned
pixels hinting of the native bamboo environment beyond but also a reminder of the city’s beautiful radiance
seen at night.
Regular openings found in the wall help induce a sense of discovery and suggest a need for exploration
and innovation found in both environments.

ALFRED DUNHILL FLAGSHIP STORE:
Shanghai, China
Alfred Dunhill, the legendary outfitters for motorists was established in nineteenth century London.
After one hundred years, Dunhill opened four international homes in London, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai's
former French Concession. Sheltered from Huahai Road’s congestion, the 1920's 'Twin Villa' has witnessed
the prosperity of old Shanghai and the turbulent evolution of a new and even more prosperous Shanghai
of today.
Satisfying a design requirement for an 'English Garden' an event lawn with two flanking 'Ying and Yang'
‘Sun’ garden to the West and 'Moon' garden to the East combine European theories of symmetry with the
asymmetrical but balanced compositions found in gardens of China. These outdoor rooms allow opportunity
for open-air events including fashion shows, weddings and gastronomy events.
The historical property on Huaihai Road (Twin Villa 796) won the Award of Merit in the 2009 UNESCO Asia-Pacific
Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation
QINGPU NANJING PARK:
Shanghai, China
Designed primarily as an exploration garden for children, Qingpu's Nanjing Park demonstrates theoretical
ideas of ‘three natures’; unaltered native landscapes, utilitarian landscapes and aesthetic landscapes.
Serpentine trails and low natural stone walls shape the land into hills and valleys and weave the 'three
natures' into viewing corridors flanked with native wild flowers and grasses including a vast dandelion
meadow (Taraxacum erythrospermum).
Most of the old canal wall remains. Yet the design allows segments of the wall to become ‘broken’ permitting
seasonal floods to permeate into specific rain gardens formed by topography to control flooding. In return,
the rain gardens support ecosystems of native riparian florae with water cleansing ‘phytoremediation’
characteristics that has become rich with native wildlife.

SHANGHAI LUJIAZUI PERFORMANCE PARK:
Shanghai, China
As part of a 45 km greenbelt along the banks of the Huangpu river and a history of marine industry dating
back to 1862, a former 'Shanghai Shipyard' centrally located on the Pudong side of the Huangpu River
is converted into a 1km linear riverfront 'Performance Park'. Marsh & meadows, undulating lawns with
amphitheatres and a network of bike paths and walks are terraced up from the river's edge as part of
a solution to contain seasonal flooding.
As a dialogue both with Lujiazui's industrial past and its financial future, an interactive reflection
pond with a 50m long cross-section inset ship located at the base of a former 'ship-cradle ramp' offer
the Exhibition Centre and International Music Hall an annexe of outdoor events. Amphitheatres around
the plaza terraced in part to accommodate seasonal floods support outdoor cultural festivities and programs
including film, fashion and concerts.
